Committed to Superior becoming the best community it can be.
ABOUT JOHN HECKMAN
Experience - Capability - Perspective
I've called Rock Creek in Superior home for over 20 years, raising my three kids here with my wife Tricia since we moved to town in 2004. I grew up in a small town in the corn and cattle country of Nebraska. Small towns are built out of people who have each other's backs — a lesson I learned many times over as the son of a banker and a social worker. I was always driven academically, which took me to Virginia Tech for my Ph.D. in Biology, and more importantly, where I met my wife Tricia. We moved to Colorado in 1997 for her law school studies at CU, and after a stint in Louisville, landed in Superior for good in 2004.
We've raised our three kids here and can vouch firsthand for what a community like Superior does for a family. We've also seen those community bonds turn into real support — through the Marshall Fire, and through the house fire that hit us again during our rebuild. Tric and I were thrilled to finally move back into our rebuilt home at the start of 2026.
I bring both a sustainability and a fiscal responsibility lens to how I think about Superior's future. I continue my 30-year career as a sustainability consultant, now focused on helping utilities decarbonize while keeping power reliable and affordable — I also teach on this topic as a lecturer at CU Boulder. For 25 years I've served on the board of a community bank, where I've seen firsthand what solid financial stewardship takes, and what happens when it's missing. I helped form the Superior Rising nonprofit for Marshall Fire recovery and currently serve on the Town's Advisory Committee for Environmental Sustainability. After more than 20 years here, I look forward to keep giving back to the town that's given so much to us.

Maximizing our
Return on Community
How does a town become a community? What part can we all play in making a place great? Can Superior be even better than it already is?
We all aspire to be good financial managers in our personal lives. We understand that we should expect a return on our investments. But we also know that there is more to life than just a good ROI. Family time, a good meal, time with friends, the feeling of a job well done, helping others -- all of these go into a life well lived.
The same goes for a town, we need good financial management, good services to ensure our residents' needs are taken care of, healthy reserves to deal with unexpected issues. But we also appreciate a sense of place, a smile and a wave from a neighbor, the ability to experience the wonder that nature provides us, the knowledge that we're benefiting from the good decisions of our predecessors, and the opportunity to positively influence our shared future.
This is what I call our shared 'Return on Community' -- something that we all contribute to, not just those holding formal roles. We benefit greatly from the solid ROC that Superior delivers to all of us, but we can't be complacent. The Superior of 2030 will be a very different place than today. We need to be actively engaged in helping to continue our great momentum but also to reinvent ourselves for the future that's coming.
Can we have an even stronger Return on Community?
Heck Yeah, Superior!
